Monique Singh has entered the theater world with a special collaboration with her sister, writer Shantie Singh. Shantie has created a theater performance Her( S)tories, which is an ode to the women from Hindustani migration history.
‘This marks a personal highlight, as it signifies a creative partnership with my sister @shantie_singh1 . Even though we have always been encouraged by our parents to develop an academic career path, we’ve both steered towards the creative field. We are inspired by the stories of our heritage – albeit in our own way – through fashion, design, dancing, writing and theater.
End of last year my sister approached me to collaborate for her upcoming theater play ‘Her (s)tories’ which would bring an ode to the -often- invisible stories of our female ancestors who’ve migrated from India 🇮🇳 to Surinam 🇸🇷 and afterwards to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 . She asked me to create an outfit for this performance. I loved it! Most of all, to celebrate our sisterhood and also because my fashion label encapsulates the fusion of Indian and contemporary design elements.
For this occasion, I’ve created an outfit, which is a modern interpretation of the Indian lehenga infused with delicate floral embroidery celebrating Indian craftmanship. It’s my way to give an homage to the strong females of various generations who’ve allowed me to be where I am today.’ – Monique Singh
Dutch broadcaster NTR NPO aired a special documentary on national TV capturing the beautiful journey of the theater play including our sisterhood and a further deep dive into the creation of my design.
